The first stop was St. Mark’s Church, with its vibrant tiled roof showcasing the Croatian coat of arms. From there, a short stroll led me to the Lotrščak Tower, where I climbed to the top for a panoramic view of the city—definitely a must-do for first-time visitors.
Lunch was at Vinodol, a traditional Croatian restaurant where I tried “štrukli,” a baked dough filled with creamy cheese. Delicious! Afterward, I visited the Museum of Broken Relationships, a quirky but fascinating museum that showcases relics from past relationships, both sad and humorous.

Day 2 Market Mornings and Green Spaces
I kicked off day two with a visit to Dolac Market, Zagreb’s most famous open-air market. Here, I mingled with locals and tasted fresh produce, cheeses, and cured meats, all while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. It’s a great spot to get a sense of everyday life in Zagreb and pick up some local ingredients. The lively energy of the market truly set the tone for an immersive day of exploration.
From there, I made my way to Zrinjevac Park, one of the city’s many green spaces, perfect for a peaceful morning walk. The park’s tree-lined paths and elegant fountains made for a relaxing escape from the urban buzz. As I strolled, I couldn’t help but notice locals enjoying their morning routines, from reading on benches to chatting with friends.
After grabbing a coffee at a café in Tkalčićeva Street, known for its lively vibe and terraces, I took a tram to Maksimir Park. The park’s lush greenery, lakes, and beautifully landscaped gardens made it a perfect spot for an afternoon break. This expansive park also includes the Zagreb Zoo, which adds another layer of fun for families and nature lovers alike.
Dinner was at Purger, a cozy restaurant serving hearty Croatian dishes that feel like a home-cooked meal. I couldn’t resist trying “pašticada,” a slow-cooked beef stew, which was rich in flavor and perfectly comforting. It was the perfect end to a relaxing day surrounded by nature and local culture.

Dolac Market was a vibrant experience, filled with fresh produce and a lively atmosphere. Maksimir Park provided a tranquil escape from the city bustle. While both places are wonderful, it would have been nice to spend more time at the market in the early morning hours.
Activity
Dolac Market is best visited early in the morning when the stalls are freshly stocked. If you love nature, set aside at least half a day for Maksimir Park—you won’t regret it.
Day 3Art, Culture, and Coffee Vibes
Zagreb has a thriving art scene, and day three was all about culture. I started at the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art, which features works by Croatian self-taught artists. It was a refreshing departure from traditional art museums, and I loved how colorful and expressive the pieces were. Next, I visited the Zagreb Cathedral, an iconic Gothic structure with two towering spires that dominate the skyline.
In the afternoon, I wandered through Ilica Street, Zagreb’s main shopping avenue, filled with boutiques, galleries, and cafes. Zagreb has a strong café culture, so I couldn’t resist stopping at Cafe de Paris for a coffee and pastry. People-watching here is an experience in itself!
The evening was spent at Hemingway Bar, one of Zagreb’s top spots for cocktails. The lively atmosphere and friendly locals made for a fun night out. If you enjoy nightlife but prefer something a bit more laid-back, Hemingway Bar is the place to be.
Cafe de Paris offered a lovely spot for a midday coffee break. The pastry I had was fresh and flaky, and the coffee was excellent. It’s a great place for people-watching, though prices were a bit higher than expected for a simple snack.

By day three, the Esplanade continued to be a comfortable retreat. The room service was prompt, and the cleanliness was top-notch. However, the hotel’s popularity means it can feel busy, particularly in the common areas.

Day 4Day Trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park
Although Zagreb itself is packed with things to do, I couldn’t resist a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park, about two hours from the city. The turquoise lakes and cascading waterfalls are a natural wonder, and I spent the entire day hiking around the park. The interconnected lakes and waterfalls create a stunning backdrop that’s hard to capture in photos. Walking the wooden pathways that snake across the water was a surreal experience.
I returned to Zagreb in the evening and had my final dinner at Dubravkin Put, a fine-dining restaurant tucked away in a forested area of the city. The seafood here was exquisite, and the atmosphere was both elegant and cozy.
As I reflected on my trip while enjoying dessert, I realized how much Zagreb had surprised me with its blend of urban excitement and natural beauty. The contrast between the bustling streets of the city and the serene, untouched landscapes of Plitvice was striking, making for a well-rounded experience. Even though I only scratched the surface, Zagreb’s cultural richness and proximity to stunning natural sites left me eager to return. Whether it’s exploring more of its hidden corners or taking another day trip into Croatia’s diverse landscapes, Zagreb has certainly earned a place on my list of favorite cities.
