The grandeur of the Gothic Revival architecture left me in awe, and the Changing of the Guard ceremony added a regal touch to the morning. From there, I strolled down to the Rideau Canal, where the shimmering waters beckoned me to take a boat tour. The scenery was breathtaking as we glided through the calm waters, learning about the rich history of the canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Lunch was a treat at Zak’s Diner, a local favorite in ByWard Market. Their famous poutine was exactly what I needed to refuel for the afternoon. Afterward, I wandered around ByWard Market, soaking in the vibrant energy of this lively area with its local artisans, fresh produce, and street performers.
As the day turned to evening, I grabbed a cocktail at the rooftop bar of my hotel, Copper Spirits & Sights, with a panoramic view of Ottawa’s skyline. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring the city’s core.

After a restful night, I was ready for a full day of culture and history. First up was the National Gallery of Canada, where the impressive Maman spider sculpture greets visitors at the entrance. Inside, I explored Canadian and Indigenous art collections, with the bright and airy layout making it easy to lose track of time. The highlight for me was the Group of Seven gallery, showcasing the country’s most famous landscape artists.
Lunch was at the trendy Play Food & Wine, where the shared plates concept allowed me to sample a variety of local flavors, from fresh seafood to artisanal cheeses. With my appetite satisfied, I made my way to the Canadian Museum of History. This museum is across the river in Gatineau, but it’s easy to reach via a quick bus ride on the OC Transpo. The exhibitions on Indigenous history and Canadian culture were both engaging and deeply informative, offering a fresh perspective on the country’s heritage.

After lunch, I had time for a quick visit to the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum, located just outside the city. Exploring this underground bunker-turned-museum was like stepping back into history, with each room telling the story of Cold War tensions.
I wrapped up the trip with a relaxed evening stroll along the Ottawa River Pathway, enjoying the sunset over the river and reflecting on the incredible experiences I’d had.
