Travel around Calgary with Bobby

I chose to visit Calgary because of its perfect blend of nature and urban life. The thought of being so close to the Rockies, while still enjoying the energy of a major city, was too good to pass up. I had heard so much about the Calgary Stampede, and I knew I had to experience that world-famous rodeo firsthand. Plus, I’m always on the lookout for great food, and Alberta beef was calling my name. Calgary’s outdoor scene, with its parks and riverside paths, also made it an ideal spot for some adventure and relaxation. It turned out to be one of the most balanced, vibrant cities I’ve ever explored!

Day 1Arrival in the Foothills – The Heartbeat of the Rocky Mountains

The first day in Calgary welcomed me with fresh mountain air as my plane touched down, and the sight of the Rockies looming in the distance immediately set the mood. I checked into Hotel Arts, a trendy downtown boutique hotel with a perfect location for exploring the city. After unpacking, I strolled along Stephen Avenue Walk, a bustling pedestrian street filled with restaurants, local shops, and stunning historic buildings. Grabbing a bite at Charcut Roast House, I couldn’t resist their Alberta beef—a must-try when in Calgary. The evening ended with a leisurely walk along the Bow River Pathway, watching the sunset over the city’s skyline.

Start your trip with a relaxed pace. The downtown area is easy to navigate on foot, and Stephen Avenue offers a perfect introduction to Calgary’s blend of modern and historic charm.

Day 2Into the Wild – Calgary Zoo and the Inglewood Experience

Day two was all about wildlife and nature. I began at the Calgary Zoo, one of Canada’s largest zoos, located on St. George’s Island. From watching playful pandas to learning about conservation efforts, it was a rewarding way to spend the morning. I then hopped on Calgary’s reliable CTrain and made my way to Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighborhood, full of boutique shops and cafes. For lunch, I stopped at The Nash, a stylish restaurant housed in a restored hotel, serving mouth-watering contemporary Canadian dishes. The afternoon was spent wandering through Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, a peaceful retreat where I encountered various bird species.

If you love animals and nature, make sure to dedicate a full day to the zoo and Inglewood. The CTrain is a great way to move around the city, and it’s super easy to use.

Day 3Sky-High Views and the Heritage of the West

I started day three with an adrenaline rush at Calgary Tower, where the glass-floor observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. From there, it was off to the Glenbow Museum, where I immersed myself in the history and culture of Alberta’s Indigenous peoples and the early pioneers. Calgary’s western roots are everywhere, and this museum brought that history to life. For lunch, I ventured to River Café in Prince’s Island Park, which offers a locally-sourced, farm-to-table dining experience right by the Bow River. The evening brought some more excitement as I explored 17th Avenue SW, Calgary’s lively entertainment district, full of bars, restaurants, and nightlife.

If you’re into culture and history, Glenbow Museum is an absolute gem. Plus, after soaking in the views from Calgary Tower, the city’s skyline takes on a whole new meaning.

Day 4 Stampede Spirit and the Rodeo Roots

No trip to Calgary is complete without experiencing the Calgary Stampede Grounds, even if it’s not Stampede season. I spent the morning at Stampede Park, learning about the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” and visiting the Western Oasis. Afterward, I couldn’t resist visiting Heritage Park Historical Village, a living history museum that took me back to the 1860s with its working steam train and old-fashioned ice cream parlor. I capped off the day with a hearty dinner at Fort Calgary, where I learned more about the city’s role in Canada’s Mountie history while enjoying a modern take on western cuisine.

Whether or not you visit during the Stampede, the western vibe is alive all year round. Heritage Park is a must-visit for history lovers, especially if you enjoy interactive experiences.

Day 5 Day Trip to Banff – Rocky Mountain Majesty

On my final day, I couldn’t resist a day trip to Banff National Park, just an hour and a half from Calgary. The journey into the Rockies was stunning, and I spent the day exploring Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, two of the most iconic lakes in Canada. The crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks were a sight I’ll never forget. After a quick lunch at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, I took a leisurely hike around the lake before heading back to Calgary. The evening was low-key, with dinner at Model Milk, a popular restaurant in a converted dairy building that specializes in inventive Canadian cuisine.

A day trip to Banff is the perfect way to end your Calgary adventure. The natural beauty of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake is unbeatable, and it’s a great way to soak up some nature before heading home.

Summary of My Trip

Over a vibrant 5-day adventure in Calgary, I immersed myself in a city that effortlessly blends urban sophistication with natural beauty. From the bustling energy of Stephen Avenue and the awe-inspiring views from Calgary Tower to the serene escape of Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, each day brought a new facet of the city’s charm. Dining at local gems like Charcut Roast House and The Nash showcased Calgary’s dedication to fresh, high-quality ingredients, while stays at stylish hotels like Hotel Arts provided comfort and convenience. Venturing beyond the city, I explored the iconic landscapes of Banff National Park and the pristine waters of Lake Louise, proving that Calgary’s reach extends far beyond its urban limits. The friendly locals and rich cultural experiences added a personal touch, making this trip an unforgettable blend of city life and wilderness. Calgary truly offers a diverse range of experiences that cater to every traveler’s interests, leaving me with cherished memories and a desire to return.
