Travel around Bruges with Bobby

Bruges had always been on my bucket list. The medieval charm, the canals, the historic architecture – it all sounded so captivating. As someone who loves to explore and experience new places, I couldn’t resist the allure of this fairytale city. Plus, the chance to indulge in Belgian chocolates and beers was a definite bonus. Bruges was calling, and I had to answer.

Day 1Cobblestones and Canal Dreams

My first morning in Bruges began with the aroma of freshly baked waffles wafting through the air. I couldn’t resist grabbing one from a nearby stall before setting off to explore. My first stop was the iconic Markt Square, dominated by the majestic Belfort Tower. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the city’s red-tiled rooftops and winding canals.

Next, I hopped on a canal boat tour, gliding through the picturesque waterways and admiring the charming medieval architecture. It was like stepping back in time! After the tour, I wandered through the narrow cobblestone streets, stumbling upon hidden courtyards and quaint shops. I couldn’t leave without trying some of Bruges’ famous chocolates, and I found myself indulging in a few too many delicious treats.

For dinner, I opted for a cozy restaurant overlooking one of the canals. I savored a hearty Flemish stew paired with a local beer, the perfect end to a magical day.

Don't miss the canal boat tour! It's the best way to experience the city's charm.

Day 2 Cycling Through History

I started my second day with a bike rental, eager to explore Bruges at my own pace. I cycled along the canals, through the peaceful Minnewater Park, and past the impressive Church of Our Lady. The city is incredibly bike-friendly, making it easy to navigate and discover hidden corners.

In the afternoon, I visited the Groeningemuseum, home to a stunning collection of Flemish Primitive paintings. I was particularly mesmerized by Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece, the “Madonna and Child with Canon van der Paele.” Afterwards, I treated myself to a Belgian waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream at a charming café.

As the sun began to set, I joined the locals for a leisurely stroll along the canals. The city took on a magical glow as the lights twinkled on the water. For dinner, I enjoyed a delicious seafood platter at a restaurant near the Markt Square, accompanied by a glass of crisp white wine.

Rent a bike! It's a fun and efficient way to see the city.

Day 3Beer and Bon Voyage

On my last day in Bruges, I visited the De Halve Maan Brewery, one of the oldest and most renowned breweries in Belgium. I took a guided tour, learning about the brewing process and sampling some of their delicious beers.

Afterwards, I strolled through the charming Burg Square, admiring the impressive City Hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. I couldn’t leave Bruges without picking up some souvenirs, so I browsed the shops along the Dijver canal, finding unique gifts for my loved ones.

For my final meal in Bruges, I indulged in a traditional Flemish carbonade flamande, a rich beef stew cooked in beer. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to this enchanting city.

As I boarded the train back to Brussels, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Bruges had captured my heart with its beauty, history, and warm hospitality. I knew I’d be back someday to explore more of its hidden treasures.

Take your time and savor every moment in Bruges. It's a city that deserves to be explored at a leisurely pace.

Summary of My Trip

Bruges was everything I hoped for and more. It truly felt like stepping into a fairytale. The medieval architecture, the charming canals, the friendly locals – it all created an unforgettable experience. I loved wandering through the cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards, and indulging in Belgian chocolates and beers. The canal boat tour was a highlight, offering a unique perspective of the city. While three days was enough to see the main attractions, I could easily have spent more time exploring the surrounding countryside and soaking up the atmosphere. Bruges is a must-visit for anyone seeking a romantic and enchanting getaway.
