Travel around Athens with Bobby
I chose to visit Athens because it’s a city where ancient history meets modern energy, offering an experience unlike any other. Walking among landmarks like the Acropolis and Parthenon made me feel as though I’d stepped back in time, connecting with centuries-old stories. The lively neighborhoods, like Plaka, blend traditional charm with bustling cafes and shops, which really brings out Athens’ unique atmosphere. The local food is also a big draw—savoring authentic Greek flavors like souvlaki and baklava was a treat. Athens is a place that truly embraces both its rich history and dynamic present, making it a must-visit for any traveler.
Day 1Stepping Back in Time at the Acropolis
My first day in Athens had to start with the Acropolis, that awe-inspiring hill crowned with the iconic Parthenon. I took an early morning bus from my hotel near Syntagma Square and made it to the Acropolis entrance just as the sun started to rise. Walking through the Propylaea gates, I felt chills – the views of Athens from up there are absolutely breathtaking! The Parthenon itself, with its towering marble columns and rich history, is everything I imagined and more. Next, I explored the Erechtheion, with its impressive statues of the Caryatids, which seemed almost alive against the bright sky.
For lunch, I headed down to the Plaka district, a lively area full of traditional tavernas and narrow, charming streets. I stopped at a cozy taverna and tried moussaka and a fresh Greek salad – the flavors were incredible! In the evening, I took a stroll around Plaka and ended the day with a drink at a rooftop bar with a perfect view of the Acropolis lit up against the night sky.
The Acropolis is a must-see, and it’s best experienced in the morning to avoid crowds. Take your time in Plaka – it's the heart of old Athens and perfect for an authentic taste of Greek life.

Day 2Ancient Agora and a Walk Through Modern Athens
Today, I explored the Ancient Agora, Athens’ social and political heart in classical times. I marveled at the Temple of Hephaestus, which is stunningly well-preserved and stands proudly amidst lush greenery. Walking through the agora, I could almost hear the echoes of philosophers discussing their ideas centuries ago.
After soaking up history, I shifted gears to explore the Monastiraki neighborhood, famous for its vibrant flea market. From artisan jewelry to vintage records, the market was a treasure trove. For lunch, I tried souvlaki at a street vendor’s stand – a delicious, savory taste I won’t soon forget. Later, I took the metro, a convenient and efficient way to get around, and ended up at the National Archaeological Museum. I spent hours wandering through its collections, absorbing Greece’s history through ancient statues, artifacts, and preserved pottery.
I tried souvlaki from a street vendor in Monastiraki, and it was simply delicious. The meat was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and wrapped in warm pita with fresh toppings. A must-try for anyone visiting Athens!

Day 3Coastal Escape to Piraeus and Sunset at Cape Sounion
After two days in the city, I decided to take a day trip to the port town of Piraeus. Only a short train ride from central Athens, Piraeus was bustling with ferry activity and coastal charm. I wandered along the marina, admiring the yachts and fishing boats before hopping on a boat for a short ride to some of the nearby islands. The Mediterranean breeze and sparkling water were the perfect escape from the city heat.
Later, I rented a car and drove to Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon sits atop a cliff overlooking the sea. I arrived just in time for sunset, watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange as the sun dipped into the Aegean. It was a magical moment that left me in awe of Greece’s natural beauty.
In Piraeus, I enjoyed seafood right by the water. The grilled octopus was fresh and tender, served with lemon and olive oil that enhanced its flavor beautifully. Dining by the sea made it all the more memorable.
