Travel around Podgorica with Bobby

I chose to visit Podgorica because, despite being the capital of Montenegro, it’s still relatively undiscovered by large tourist crowds. I was drawn to the idea of experiencing both the natural beauty and the rich historical background. Walking along the Morača River and exploring Skadar Lake seemed like perfect outdoor activities. Plus, I was excited to see remnants of the Ottoman era and taste the local Montenegrin cuisine. Podgorica offers a balance of modern city life and historical charm, making it a peaceful yet intriguing destination to explore.

Day 1Morning by the Morača River, Afternoon in Historic Stari Grad

On my first morning in Podgorica, I began the day with a peaceful walk along the Morača River. The early morning air was cool, and the city’s calm atmosphere instantly made me feel at ease. The parks lining the river are a popular spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy a morning stroll or jog. I stopped at a riverside café for breakfast and tried the local “burek,” a savory pastry filled with cheese, alongside a strong Montenegrin coffee. The riverside view and slow pace of the morning were the perfect introduction to the city.

In the afternoon, I headed toward the city center to visit the Millennium Bridge, a stunning piece of modern architecture. Crossing the bridge, I made my way to Stari Grad, the old town. The narrow, cobblestone streets transport you back to the Ottoman era, with highlights like the Sahat Kula (Clock Tower) and the Osmanagić Mosque. Exploring the area, I found small cafés hidden in the alleyways, perfect for a quiet break.

For dinner, I found a cozy restaurant in Stari Grad and enjoyed “čevapi,” small grilled sausages served with yogurt and bread, a staple of Montenegrin cuisine. The warm hospitality and delicious flavors made the meal unforgettable.

My first day in Podgorica was a perfect mix of nature and history. A walk along the Morača River followed by an exploration of Stari Grad is a great way to start your trip. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes for exploring the old town’s charming streets!

Day 2Nature and Boating at Skadar Lake

On my second day, I ventured outside Podgorica to explore the natural beauty of Skadar Lake. Just a 30-minute drive from the city, this massive freshwater lake is a haven for nature lovers. The weather was perfect, so I joined a boat tour to fully experience the serenity of the lake. The tour, starting from a small village on the shore, was peaceful as we drifted through lush greenery and spotted migratory birds soaring overhead.

Our guide shared fascinating stories about the lake’s biodiversity, and we even stopped at one of the local villages to taste homemade wine and olives. After the tour, I had lunch at a lakeside restaurant, savoring “Riblja Čorba,” a fresh fish soup that perfectly captured the flavors of the region. The tranquility of the lake and the beauty of the surrounding nature were some of the most peaceful moments of my trip.

Returning to the city in the evening, I decided to check out Podgorica’s nightlife in the City Kvart area. The modern bars and clubs here are lively, and I spent the night at Soul II Soul, a popular bar with great music and a fun crowd. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day in nature.

Skadar Lake is a must-visit if you love nature and want a break from city life. The boat tour is a relaxing way to appreciate the lake's beauty, and for evening fun, City Kvart’s vibrant bars offer a lively nightlife experience.

Day 3Modern City Vibes and Culinary Delights

On my final day in Podgorica, I set out to experience the modern side of the city. I started my morning at a local café, indulging in “kačamak,” a hearty dish made from cornmeal and cheese. It was the perfect energy boost for a day of exploring. After breakfast, I walked around Trg Nezavisnosti (Independence Square), the heart of Podgorica’s social life. The square is surrounded by shops and historic buildings, offering a blend of old and new.

I spent the afternoon crossing the Millennium Bridge once again, this time enjoying the nearby park for a leisurely walk. Throughout my time in Podgorica, I was struck by how seamlessly the city blends natural beauty with modern architecture. It’s a place where you can walk from a historic site to a modern shopping area within minutes.

For my last dinner in Podgorica, I chose Buda Bar, a chic riverside spot with a relaxing atmosphere. The stylish décor and quiet setting were the perfect backdrop for unwinding after a busy day. I enjoyed cocktails and light tapas as I reflected on my wonderful time in the city.

Podgorica’s blend of modern and traditional elements makes it a unique destination. Spend your final day exploring the city center and indulging in the local cuisine at Buda Bar for a relaxing end to your trip.
