The moment I arrived in Olomouc, I could sense that this city was something special, a quieter but equally enchanting counterpart to Prague. I started my journey right in the heart of the city at Upper Square (Horní náměstí), where the stunning Holy Trinity Column immediately grabbed my attention. Standing tall at 35 meters, this baroque masterpiece is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and I couldn’t help but admire the intricate sculptures surrounding it. It’s an awe-inspiring monument to the city’s resilience after the plague.
From there, I took a short walk to St. Wenceslas Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic structure that towers over the city. The cathedral’s spires seemed to reach into the sky, and inside, the beautiful stained-glass windows filled the space with colored light. The peace and serenity within the cathedral contrasted with the hustle of the square, offering a perfect moment for reflection.
Lunch took me to a cozy spot called Moravská restaurace, where I indulged in a hearty plate of svíčková (marinated beef with creamy sauce and dumplings). If you’re going to dive into Czech cuisine, this is a must-try!

The views from the top are spectacular, especially of the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, which stands proudly against the skyline. The basilica itself is a work of art, and stepping inside felt like walking into a quiet sanctuary far from the busy world below.
After soaking in the vistas, I couldn’t resist visiting the nearby Olomouc Zoo, which turned out to be an unexpected delight. The zoo is spread across a large area, offering plenty of space for the animals, and it’s great for families. I particularly loved seeing the giraffes, but what stood out the most was the zoo’s peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere.

For my final day in Olomouc, I decided to slow down a bit and immerse myself in the local culture. I started my day at the Olomouc Farmers Market in Lower Square (Dolní náměstí). The market is a vibrant place filled with local products, from fresh produce to handmade crafts. I picked up some Olomoucké tvarůžky (a traditional, pungent cheese) to take home, though I couldn’t resist tasting some on the spot. The market is also a great place to people-watch and get a sense of daily life in the city.
Next, I wandered through some of the quieter streets and discovered Terezská brána (Theresa’s Gate), a hidden gem often overlooked by visitors. This historical gate, built in the 18th century, is a small but beautiful remnant of the city’s fortifications. It’s amazing how much history can be found tucked away in the corners of Olomouc.

It was the perfect way to wrap up my time in Olomouc—dancing and celebrating in a city that blends history and modern life so well.
