Travel around Kotor with Bobby

I decided to visit Kotor because I’d always heard about its incredible blend of natural beauty and rich history. As a travel guide, I’m drawn to places where you can explore both culture and nature, and Kotor offers exactly that. The idea of walking through a UNESCO-listed Old Town, with its medieval streets and stone buildings, was irresistible. Plus, the views from St. John’s Fortress are legendary, and I couldn’t wait to see the Bay of Kotor from that vantage point. It’s the perfect place for someone like me, who loves combining scenic hikes with exploring ancient history.

Day 1Stepping Back in Time in Kotor Old Town

My journey began in Kotor’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, a place where every stone tells a story. As soon as I walked through the Sea Gate, I felt like I had been transported back in time. The narrow, winding streets were a maze of history, leading me to incredible sights like the Cathedral of St. Tryphon. This 12th-century cathedral, with its Romanesque architecture, left me in awe of Kotor’s deep-rooted history. After that, I stumbled upon the Clock Tower, a central landmark surrounded by cafes and squares buzzing with life. For lunch, I settled at Konoba Scala Santa, a cozy spot in the Old Town serving delicious Montenegrin pršut and cheese. The cured meats were full of flavor, and I paired them with a glass of local wine. It was a great way to get a taste of the region’s traditional cuisine. In the afternoon, I visited the Maritime Museum of Montenegro. The museum’s exhibits on Kotor’s naval history were fascinating, with model ships, weapons, and old maritime maps on display. It’s a great spot to learn more about how this town became a crucial hub in the Adriatic.

Kotor’s Old Town is easily walkable, so take your time to explore its hidden corners. Wear comfortable shoes because the cobblestone streets can be tough on your feet!

Day 2Conquering the Heights of St. John’s Fortress

Day two began with the most iconic activity in Kotor: the hike up to St. John’s Fortress. The fortress sits 1,350 steps above the Old Town, but trust me, the effort is worth it. I started early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, and as I climbed, the view of Kotor Bay became more and more spectacular. The turquoise water framed by steep, green mountains was a sight I’ll never forget.

By the time I reached the top, I was standing on centuries of history. The fortress itself dates back to medieval times, with remnants of ancient walls, lookouts, and a chapel. I spent a while at the summit, soaking in the views and the quiet of the place.

After descending, I was ready for a hearty lunch, so I stopped by Galion Restaurant along the waterfront. Their seafood risotto was the best I’ve had in a while, made with fresh, local catch and perfectly seasoned. The setting, right on the bay, gave me a front-row seat to the beauty of Kotor.

The rest of the afternoon was spent strolling along the marina and checking out the local shops. In the evening, I visited Maximus Nightclub in the Old Town, which is housed in an old fortress. It was a unique experience to dance the night away in such a historical setting!

The hike up to St. John’s Fortress can be steep, so start early and bring water. The view from the top is absolutely unforgettable, but it’s a climb that demands preparation.

Day 3Exploring Beyond Kotor – Perast and the Bay

For my final day, I decided to venture out of Kotor to explore the charming town of Perast, just a 20-minute drive away. Perast is small but incredibly picturesque, with its baroque palaces and beautiful churches lining the waterfront. I took a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island with a fascinating legend and an old church filled with historical artifacts. The views from the island, with Perast and the surrounding mountains as a backdrop, were magical. Back on the mainland, I had a leisurely lunch at Conte Hotel & Restaurant, which overlooks the bay. Their octopus salad and local fish dishes were fresh and light—perfect for a sunny day by the water. After lunch, I returned to Kotor and took one last stroll through the Old Town. In the late afternoon, I visited Dobrota Beach, a quiet spot just outside the town, to relax by the water. The calm, shallow waters were ideal for unwinding after three days of exploring.

Don’t miss Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks—it’s a peaceful escape from the more touristy spots in Kotor. If you’re looking for something quieter but just as beautiful, this is the place to be.

Summary of My Trip

Kotor was everything I hoped it would be and more. The blend of history, nature, and local culture made every moment of my stay feel special. Walking through the narrow streets of the Old Town, I felt as though I was stepping back in time, with centuries of history all around me. The views from St. John’s Fortress were absolutely breathtaking, offering one of the best panoramas I’ve ever seen. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get around, with most places within walking distance or a short drive away. The food was another highlight—fresh seafood, local delicacies, and the simple, hearty meals really gave me a taste of Montenegro’s culinary heritage. Although the nightlife in Kotor is quieter compared to bigger cities, I appreciated the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere at every spot. Perast and the surrounding bay provided a peaceful escape and added variety to the trip. If I had to sum it up, Kotor is a destination for those who love history, stunning landscapes, and authentic experiences. My tip? Come ready to walk, eat well, and be amazed by the beauty at every turn.
