Day 1Arriving in the Heart of Kutaisi – A Stroll Through History

When I arrived in Kutaisi, I immediately felt the historical significance of this city. After checking into my cozy guesthouse near the city center (I highly recommend staying in a local guesthouse to get the full Georgian experience), I set out to explore one of Kutaisi’s most iconic landmarks: Bagrati Cathedral. This towering cathedral, perched on a hill, offers not only a glimpse into Georgia’s medieval history but also breathtaking views of the city below. After spending time walking around the cathedral grounds, I headed to Kutaisi Central Park, where locals and visitors alike gather to relax. It’s the perfect spot to sit with a cup of coffee and soak in the city’s vibe.

For dinner, I decided to try Palaty Restaurant, a local favorite that blends traditional Georgian cuisine with modern touches. The khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and khinkali (Georgian dumplings) were absolutely delicious! I ended the day with a glass of Georgian wine, which is a must-try when you’re here.

Kutaisi’s first impression was truly magical. The historic charm of Bagrati Cathedral paired with the relaxing city park gave me a great introduction, and the food at Palaty was the perfect ending to the day.

Day 2Into the Depths of Prometheus Cave – A Natural Wonder

My second day was all about exploring the natural beauty surrounding Kutaisi. I started with a trip to Prometheus Cave, located just outside the city. The cave is a jaw-dropping experience with its illuminated stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers. Walking through the various chambers felt otherworldly, and I couldn’t help but be amazed at how well-preserved and accessible this natural wonder is. If you visit Kutaisi, this is an absolute must-see.

After the cave, I headed back to the city for lunch at Bungalow, a riverside restaurant that offers both great food and beautiful views of the Rioni River. I ordered a plate of grilled trout, which was fresh and perfectly cooked. In the evening, I decided to check out the local nightlife and went to Satsnakheli Wine Bar, a cozy place where locals and travelers meet over glasses of Georgian wine. The atmosphere was warm, and the wine tasting was an excellent way to end the day.

Prometheus Cave was one of the most impressive natural sites I’ve seen, and it’s a must for any traveler to Kutaisi. Ending the day at a wine bar was a perfect way to unwind and experience Georgian hospitality.

Day 3A Journey Through Time at Gelati Monastery

On my third day, I dove deeper into Georgia’s rich religious history by visiting Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is not just an architectural marvel but also a place of peace and reflection. I spent a few hours exploring the intricate frescoes and walking through the serene surroundings. Gelati was once one of the most important centers of learning in medieval Georgia, and it truly feels like stepping back in time.

For lunch, I made my way to a local eatery called Sisters Café, which offers hearty Georgian dishes. I tried lobio (a traditional bean stew) with mchadi (cornbread) and it hit the spot after a morning of exploring. In the late afternoon, I visited the Green Bazaar, a lively market where you can find fresh fruits, spices, and local crafts. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs and experience local life.

Gelati Monastery is a cultural treasure, and it’s hard not to be moved by its historical significance. The Green Bazaar was a delightful way to connect with the local culture and sample some authentic Georgian products.

Day 4 Chasing Waterfalls at Martvili Canyon

Day four was all about getting outside and enjoying Kutaisi’s stunning natural landscapes. I took a short drive to Martvili Canyon, a place I had heard locals rave about. This canyon is absolutely beautiful, with turquoise waters and lush greenery surrounding it. I rented a small boat and drifted through the canyon, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect balance of adventure and tranquility.

Back in Kutaisi, I visited House Bar, a relaxed venue offering drinks and live music. The atmosphere was laid-back, and it was a good place to unwind after a day of exploring. Dinner was at Bar-Restaurant Florencia, where I enjoyed shashlik (grilled meat skewers) paired with more Georgian wine. Kutaisi’s culinary scene never disappoints.

Martvili Canyon was an adventure I’ll never forget—peaceful yet exciting at the same time. If you’re looking to connect with nature, this is the perfect spot, and the food in Kutaisi continues to impress.

Summary of My Trip

During the first two days in Kutaisi, I immersed myself in both the city’s history and natural beauty. On Day 1, I visited the iconic Bagrati Cathedral, where the views over Kutaisi were just as impressive as the cathedral itself. A stroll through Kutaisi Central Park allowed me to soak in the local atmosphere before indulging in a delicious dinner at Palaty Restaurant, sampling Georgian dishes like khachapuri and khinkali. On Day 2, I ventured outside the city to the stunning Prometheus Cave, where the illuminated rock formations and underground rivers left me in awe. A relaxing lunch at Bungalow along the river followed, and I wrapped up the day with a wine tasting at Satsnakheli Wine Bar.

On Day 3, I explored the historical depth of Gelati Monastery, marveling at its ancient frescoes and peaceful surroundings. Afterward, I enjoyed a traditional Georgian lunch at Sisters Café and wandered through the bustling Green Bazaar, soaking in the local culture. Day 4 took me to Martvili Canyon, where I took a serene boat ride through the turquoise waters and lush landscapes, an absolute highlight of the trip. The evening concluded with live music at House Bar and a mouth-watering dinner at Bar-Restaurant Florencia, rounding off another perfect day in Kutaisi.

My experiences

Kutaisi was truly a pleasant surprise. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the balance between history and nature that defines the city. The iconic Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery transported me back in time, while the breathtaking Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon gave me a chance to reconnect with nature in the most spectacular ways. One of my favorite aspects of Kutaisi was the food—whether it was traditional dishes like khachapuri or a wine-tasting evening at Satsnakheli Wine Bar, every meal felt like a cultural experience. The local hospitality was unforgettable, especially in the guesthouse where I stayed, where the hosts made me feel like part of the family. The city itself is easy to navigate, with taxis and public transport readily available. It’s also budget-friendly, making it accessible for a wide range of travelers. If I had to mention one downside, it would be that some of the infrastructure, especially in accommodations, could use an upgrade. However, the charm of the city and its people more than made up for it. Overall, Kutaisi is a hidden gem, perfect for those seeking history, adventure, and a taste of Georgia’s rich culture. I'd highly recommend it to anyone wanting an authentic Georgian experience.
