Travel around Siem Reap with Bobby

I decided to visit Siem Reap because I’ve always been drawn to places rich in history and culture, and Angkor Wat was at the top of my list. As a travel guide, I knew this city offered not only ancient temples but also a vibrant local scene with markets and street food that I couldn’t resist. I wanted to experience the balance between the peaceful moments exploring nature, like at Tonlé Sap Lake, and the energy of Pub Street’s nightlife. The warmth of the Cambodian people and the authenticity of their traditions made the trip even more appealing. Honestly, Siem Reap is a place where you can feel the pulse of both the past and the present.

Day 1Sunrise at Angkor Wat and Iconic Temples

There’s no better way to start exploring Siem Reap than with a sunrise visit to Angkor Wat. My tuk-tuk driver picked me up at 4:30 AM, and by the time I arrived, the temple grounds were already filling with anticipation. As the sun began to rise, the silhouette of Angkor Wat reflected perfectly in the moat, creating an unforgettable scene. Afterward, I explored the intricate carvings and towering spires of this ancient wonder. From there, I visited Bayon Temple to see its famous stone faces and spent some time at Ta Prohm, the temple intertwined with massive tree roots.

After a full morning, I grabbed a quick lunch at a local restaurant near the temples and returned to my hotel for a rest. For dinner, I decided to try some authentic Amok Trey at a local spot — a rich, creamy fish curry that was the perfect end to a long day.

Don’t skip the sunrise at Angkor Wat; it’s the perfect introduction to the magic of Siem Reap. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes to explore the temples with ease.

Day 2Hidden Gems and Local Markets

On day two, I ventured out to Banteay Srei, a bit further from the main temple complex, but absolutely worth it. Known for its pink sandstone and intricate carvings, it’s often called the “Citadel of Women.” The delicate artwork here feels almost otherworldly. Later, I explored Preah Khan, one of the quieter temples, where the overgrown jungle gives it a serene, mystical vibe. The lack of crowds made it a truly peaceful experience.

In the afternoon, I headed back to Siem Reap and visited the Made in Cambodia Market. It’s a great spot to find local crafts and support Cambodian artisans. I picked up some handmade jewelry and enjoyed some street food — including Bai Sach Chrouk, a simple but delicious dish of grilled pork and rice.

Visiting smaller temples like Banteay Srei offers a more intimate experience. Don’t miss the local markets for unique souvenirs and a taste of authentic Cambodian street food.

Day 3Floating Villages and Waterfalls

For something completely different, I spent the morning visiting the floating villages on Tonlé Sap Lake. The boat ride through the village was peaceful, and learning about the local way of life on the water was eye-opening. Seeing homes, schools, and temples floating on the lake felt like stepping into another world. After a couple of hours on the lake, I returned to Siem Reap for a quick lunch.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Phnom Kulen National Park, home to stunning waterfalls and the famous reclining Buddha statue. I hiked through the park, took a dip in the waterfalls, and enjoyed the serene natural beauty of the area. It was the perfect break from temple-hopping and offered a refreshing, nature-filled afternoon.

Tonlé Sap Lake offers a glimpse into life on the water and is a peaceful escape from the city. Phnom Kulen’s waterfalls are a great place to relax and cool off in nature.

Day 4 Apsara Dance and Pub Street Nightlife

On my last day, I slowed things down a bit. After a leisurely breakfast, I visited a few smaller temples before enjoying a relaxing afternoon by my hotel’s pool. In the evening, I made my way to Temple Club on Pub Street to watch an Apsara dance performance. The dancers were graceful and the performance was beautifully orchestrated, giving me a glimpse into Cambodia’s artistic heritage.

After the show, I fully immersed myself in the energy of Pub Street. I grabbed drinks at Angkor What? Bar and ended the night with a final cocktail at the stylish Miss Wong Cocktail Bar. The contrast between the vibrant party atmosphere and the laid-back elegance of Miss Wong made for a well-rounded evening.

Watching an Apsara dance performance is a must — it’s a window into Cambodia’s cultural history. For nightlife, Pub Street is the perfect place to end your trip with a mix of fun and relaxation.

Summary of My Trip

Siem Reap is a city full of rich history, breathtaking temples, and vibrant culture. Over four days, I explored the iconic Angkor Wat at sunrise, wandered through quieter temples like Banteay Srei and Preah Khan, and visited the floating villages on Tonlé Sap Lake. Each day offered a unique experience, from the intricacy of temple carvings to the peacefulness of Phnom Kulen’s waterfalls. The local markets and street food gave me a taste of authentic Cambodian life, while the floating villages showcased the resilience of those living on the water.

In the evenings, I immersed myself in the city’s lively atmosphere, enjoying traditional Apsara dance performances and the nightlife of Pub Street. Whether sipping cocktails at Miss Wong or dancing the night away at Angkor What? Bar, the mix of culture and entertainment made my time in Siem Reap unforgettable. This city offers the perfect blend of history, nature, and fun, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking a well-rounded adventure.

My experiences

Siem Reap has been an unforgettable experience for me, blending ancient history with modern energy in a way that few places can. The temples, especially Angkor Wat, left me in awe — there’s something truly magical about wandering through centuries-old structures and feeling the weight of history around you. But beyond the temples, the floating villages on Tonlé Sap and the natural beauty of Phnom Kulen gave me a deeper appreciation for Cambodia's cultural diversity and natural wonders. The food, whether from street vendors or upscale restaurants, was a delightful mix of bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Every meal felt like an opportunity to explore the culture more intimately. The local markets, like Made in Cambodia Market, were not only great for souvenirs but also offered a glimpse into the craftsmanship and artistry of the Khmer people. Siem Reap’s nightlife on Pub Street was an exciting way to end my days, offering a mix of lively bars and peaceful cocktail spots. The people I met, both locals and fellow travelers, were warm and welcoming, making my stay even more enjoyable. Overall, the balance between exploration, relaxation, and cultural immersion made my time here incredibly fulfilling. Siem Reap truly has something for everyone, and I’d recommend it to anyone seeking a travel destination with a rich mix of history and vibrant experiences.
